Overview
What a stair runner is, and who it suits
A stair runner is a strip of carpet that runs up the centre of the staircase, leaving a margin of exposed timber or painted stair on either side. It gives you the grip, warmth and quiet of carpet while keeping the character of the staircase on show. In Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Islington and North London, it is one of the most effective ways to make a hallway feel finished.
Stair runners are a specialism at Urban Floors. Runners are less forgiving than fitted stair carpet: the margins must be even from the bottom step to the top, the pattern must line up, and every turn and winder has to look deliberate. Small errors on step one become obvious by step fourteen. That is why the measure matters as much as the fit, and why Ashton does both himself.
The right runner depends on how the stairs are used. A busy family home needs a dense, hard-wearing weave; a quieter period house might suit a natural-look flatweave or a bold herringbone with a contrasting border. During the free measuring visit Ashton looks at your staircase, your hallway and how the space is used, then recommends options that will wear well rather than just photograph well.
Who it's for
- Homeowners with painted or timber stairs who want grip and warmth without hiding them
- Period properties where the staircase is a feature of the hallway
- Families wanting to reduce noise and slips on hard stairs
- Anyone renovating a hallway who wants a finished, tailored look
Get it right first time
What goes wrong when a runner is rushed
Uneven margins
If the runner drifts even a few millimetres per step, the exposed margins visibly narrow on one side by the top. It cannot be corrected without lifting and refitting.
Loose treads become a slip risk
A runner that is not tensioned and secured correctly creeps at the nosing. Over time it loosens, bunches and becomes a trip hazard on the most dangerous part of the house.
Premature wear at the nosing
The nosing takes most of the wear. Poor underlay choice or a badly formed turn concentrates that wear and shortens the life of an expensive runner.
Pattern misalignment
Stripes and herringbones must be aligned step to step. Misalignment is the first thing visitors notice and the hardest thing to live with.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ordering a runner to a guessed length before the stairs are properly measured, including winders and landings
- Choosing a loose, soft pile for a high-traffic staircase
- Skipping preparation of old gripper, nails and paint ridges on the treads
- Buying a runner online and then looking for someone to fit it; Urban Floors only fits products it supplies, so the product and the fit are matched from the start

In detail
Stair runner options, explained
Weaves and finishes
Runners come in a wide range of constructions, from tight flatweaves and natural-look textures to herringbone, striped and patterned designs. Flatweaves give a crisp, tailored line on the nosing; denser loop and cut constructions add comfort underfoot. Ashton will show you which constructions suit a staircase rather than a floor.
Borders and edging
Many runners are finished with a contrasting border, which frames the runner and sharpens the margins on painted stairs. The width of the runner and the width of the border are chosen together, so the proportions suit your staircase.
Straight flights, turns and winders
Straight flights are the simplest. Quarter-turns, half-landings and winders need careful planning so the runner either continues around the turn or stops and restarts neatly. This is decided at the measure, not on the day of fitting.
Runners with landings and hallways
A runner can stop at the top step, continue across the landing, or meet fitted carpet on the landing. Ashton plans these transitions with you so the staircase, landing and hallway work as one scheme.
Residential focus
Urban Floors primarily fits residential staircases. Small-scale commercial stair work is undertaken, but the specialism is homes across Islington and North London.
