Overview

Laminate flooring explained

Laminate is a hard-wearing floor made from a high-density core with a printed wood-effect layer and a tough protective surface. It is a cost-effective way to get the look of timber in living rooms, bedrooms and hallways.

Like any floating floor, laminate depends on a flat base and correct expansion gaps. Laid well, it is solid underfoot and quiet; laid badly, it creaks, bounces and opens up at the joints. Ashton checks the subfloor at the free measure and includes any preparation in your fixed price.

Laminate is supplied with suitable underlay, and trims and thresholds are planned in advance so the floor meets carpet, LVT or vinyl neatly.

Who it's for

  • Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and hallways
  • Homeowners wanting a wood look on a sensible budget
  • Landlords needing a durable, easy-to-clean floor
  • Busy homes where a hard-wearing surface matters

Get it right first time

Why laminate goes wrong

Creaking and bounce

Usually an uneven subfloor or wrong underlay. It rarely improves with time.

Lifting at the edges

Laminate needs room to move. Without expansion gaps it pushes against walls and lifts.

Water damage in the wrong room

Not every laminate suits wet areas. Ashton will advise whether LVT or vinyl is better for kitchens and bathrooms.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Laying laminate over an uneven floor
  • Skipping expansion gaps under skirting and door frames
  • Choosing laminate for a room better suited to LVT or vinyl

In detail

Laminate options and fitting details

Thickness and finish

Laminate comes in different thicknesses and surface textures. Ashton will show you options that suit the room and the traffic it gets.

Underlay

Underlay reduces noise and smooths minor imperfections. It is supplied and fitted with the laminate.

Laminate vs LVT

Laminate is a cost-effective wood look; LVT is more water-tolerant and suits underfloor heating. Ashton will give you an honest recommendation.
